Bin Activators

Bin activators are used beneath silos and hoppers to promote the reliable discharge of powders and granular bulk materials that may otherwise bridge, compact or flow irregularly. A suspended conical section is vibrated so that material near the outlet remains in motion and can continue towards downstream conveying, feeding or process equipment.

Technical overview

The correct bin activator is selected according to the stored material, silo geometry, required discharge capacity and the equipment installed after the outlet. Its purpose is to improve bulk-solid flow while providing a controlled connection between the storage vessel and the next stage of the process.

What is Bin Activator?

A bin activator, also known as a vibrating cone, is a discharge device installed beneath a silo, bunker or hopper. The conical section is suspended from the storage vessel and is vibrated during operation, helping powders and granular materials move towards the outlet instead of remaining stationary around the lower part of the silo.

This type of equipment is particularly useful for bulk solids that do not discharge reliably under gravity alone. Materials may compact, form bridges or create irregular flow patterns inside storage equipment. Applying vibration to the outlet section helps restore material movement and supports a more consistent discharge into downstream machinery.

The operating result depends on both the material being stored and the process that follows the silo. Product flow characteristics, required capacity and downstream equipment must therefore be considered together when the discharge system is selected.

Bin activators can be manufactured using carbon steel or stainless steel according to the application. A flexible sealing arrangement between the silo and the vibrating cone allows the activator to move while maintaining the connection to the storage vessel.

Where the discharged material enters a pneumatic conveying system, the bin activator can feed the product towards equipment such as an airlock or another suitable transfer device. The complete arrangement must be selected according to the conveying method and the behaviour of the bulk material.

Applications include powders used in food and industrial production, such as flour or cocoa powder, as well as other granular or powdered raw materials where reliable silo discharge is required. By promoting movement across the outlet area, a correctly selected bin activator can also help reduce discharge irregularities and segregation associated with poor flow behaviour.

Bin Activator Models

The product range represented on this page includes BA Bin Activators for the discharge of powders and granular materials from silos and hoppers. The BA design uses a conical discharge body that is mechanically isolated from the silo and activated by vibration.

A key feature of the BA design is its seamless cone together with a double-flanged, seamless sealing arrangement. This construction provides the flexible connection required between the vibrating component and the fixed silo while helping maintain a contained material path.

The units have a compact and robust construction and require relatively low vibration power for operation. Carbon-steel and stainless-steel configurations can be selected according to the material and process requirements.

Food-compatible versions are available for applications requiring suitable material-contact construction and hygienic design. The exact configuration should be selected according to the stored product and the requirements of the installation rather than assuming that every version is suitable for every food process.

Thanks to its hygienic design and surface coatings, it complies with Directive (EC) No 1935/2004 and is suitable for use in various food processing application. Also we can supply ATEX configurations as Electric vibrator with adjustable masses, ATEXcertified for zone 21

The appropriate BA Bin Activator should be determined from the material flow characteristics, silo outlet dimensions, expected discharge rate and downstream equipment. Correct sizing and application are essential because the activator forms part of the complete silo-discharge system rather than operating as an independent conveying machine.
